Exodus : Traveler's Story

Archetype Entertainment : Pre-Launch Content

We had the honor of helping create some of the first pre-launch story content for Archetype Entertainment’s highly anticipated Exodus game. These cinematic teasers align with dark and intriguing lore created by the game’s writers as a way to reveal the state of humanity leading up to where the game storyline begins.

ShieldEp 1 : "That'll Do"
ShieldEp 2 : "Ninety-Nine Percent Workable"
ShieldEp 3 : Spares
ShieldEp 4 "Inheritance"

The Exodus Prologue / Traveler’s Story on their official site can be found here.

Our process for creating these unique storytelling pieces included both traditional and real-time vfx pipelines, utilizing Unreal Engine wherever possible. The following images and video give a small behind-the-scenes glimpse into the labor of love.

ShieldEp 1 : UE Setup Hallway

Building out the Awakened Technologies Corporation’s branding and facility was a fun challenge. We got to imagine all of it from scratch, creating an elegant yet dystopian development environment for a future generation. It also provided the opportunity to geek out on some procedural animation goodness in UE.

ShieldEp 1 : UE Setup Scan Bay
ShieldEp 2 : Deleted Scene WIP
ShieldEp 2 : Arkship Passenger Blueprint

We created a museum exhibit of the salvaged work tablet belonging to Edith Zhang, a talented Arkship engineer under extreme pressure. The moments of time recovered from her video work logs provide additional context to the written lore and her very personal battles being fought amidst the even greater challenges humanity is facing.

ShieldEp 2 : Impressive engineer building the impossible
ShieldEp 3 : Marietta Mocap
ShieldEp 3 : Marietta in Unreal Engine
ShieldEp 3 : Dating App Exploration

The recovered, neural-linked mobile device of a wealthy Arkship owner sets the stage for a darkly satisfying story of another group’s departure from Earth. From a production standpoint, the device and UI went through a traditional vfx pipeline while the characters ended up in UE to take advantage of the most cutting edge tools for the job.

ShieldEp 4 : Cryosuit / Marvelous Designer
ShieldEp 4 : Cryopod WIP
ShieldEp 4 : Unreal Engine

Creating the cryopod scene and its vulnerable occupant gave us a chance to explore some storytelling subtleties that resulted in an ominous counterpart to the lore. With UE as our weapon of choice again, we were able to iterate quickly and fluidly navigate feedback.
